Venda Football Club (VFC) are bracing themselves for a tough game against Orbit College, with whom they will battle for league points in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League match at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg on Saturday afternoon.
Although it will be an away fixture, VFC must aim to collect the maximum points at stake if they are serious about avoiding relegation at the end of the season. VFC, or Maunavhathu as they are commonly known, are among the bottom three teams on the log standings. They, along with Cape Town Spurs and Leruma United, have 16 points.
Like Orbit College, VFC failed to secure a victory and collect maximum points last weekend. Maunavhathu were held to a goalless draw by the University of Pretoria FC at Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday, while Orbit played to a 2-2 draw against Casric Stars at Olympia Park Stadium.
VFC head coach Stanford Nkoane is adamant that his team is heading into battle with one goal in mind - to collect all three points. He said everyone in the camp was aware that nothing less than a victory against Orbit would help the team avoid relegation.
Even if VFC manage to beat Orbit College on Saturday, they will remain third from the bottom of the log, as Pretoria Callies, currently in 13th place, have already accumulated 23 points.
VFC's defence, marshalled by Tshovelo Mathebula, Nhlanhla Makhubele, and Bongolethu Siyasi, will face a tough test against Orbit's attacking duo, James Makhonza and Freddy Skhosana. Whether Orbit's defenders will have the strength to stop VFC's strikers - Judas Moseamedi, Banele Gama, and Onke Moletshe - remains to be seen.
