Mayor visits Khosa home and condemns killings

A delegation from the Vhembe District Municipality, which included Mayor Freda Nkondo and other councillors, visited the Khosa family in Malamulele last Thursday to extend their condolences.

A delegation from the Vhembe District Municipality, which included Mayor Freda Nkondo and other councillors, visited the Khosa family in Malamulele last Thursday to extend their condolences.

Nkondo condemned the shooting and killing of 22-year-old Laveko Khosa, who was a Grade 12 learner at EPP Mhinga Secondary School. A 17-year-old girl was also raped when robbers entered the home in the early hours of Monday, 5 May. The attackers also assaulted the family's 12-year-old boy and tied up both parents before ransacking the house.

"I call upon all stakeholders to join hands and work together to support the Khosa family and to find ways to fight the crime in our region," said Nkondo.

According to Nkondo, crime statistics are very high in the district, and solutions are needed to ensure that what happened to the Khosa family does not happen again. She urged communities to engage with crime-fighting structures.

A family spokesperson for the bereaved Khosa family, Erick Makondo, said they were still heartbroken and traumatised by the events.

The family said Laveko Khosa's funeral would be held on Saturday, 17 May, at the Malamulele graveyard.
