MEC Matibe’s doctorate should serve as an example, says Premier

Matibe’s thesis developed a novel oversight model to enhance financial accountability and reduce wasteful expenditure in South African government.

Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba was among those to congratulate Economic Development, Environment and Tourism MEC Tshitereke Matibe on receiving his PhD in Public Administration. She said his achievement should serve as an example to others that hard work and dedication pay off.

Ramathuba was speaking at Lira Boutique near Nandoni Dam on Tuesday, 19 May, during a congratulatory lunch held in honour of Matibe’s doctorate, awarded by the University of Venda (Univen). His thesis examined the effectiveness of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts in promoting financial oversight and accountability within the Limpopo Provincial Government.

Ramathuba described the achievement as the ultimate testament to Matibe’s relentless dedication, brilliant intellect, and unbreakable spirit.

“The journey to a doctoral degree is never a smooth or easy path. It is a long, gruelling marathon paved with immense sacrifice, late nights and a level of grit that tests the absolute limits of human endurance. Over the past few years, you have poured your sweat, your tears and your entire heart into your research. You chose a road of deep intellectual isolation, trading normal routines for endless hours in libraries and writing rooms,” said Ramathuba.

Matibe, who also serves as Chairperson of the ANC in the Vhembe region, was born and raised in the rural village of Mufulwi, near Matavhela in the Mutale area. He said his doctoral thesis developed a first-of-its-kind oversight model designed to strengthen institutional accountability and systematically reduce unauthorised, irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure across South African government structures and local municipalities.
