MEC to meet Waterval High SGB after unsafe classrooms shutdown

Limpopo Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya is set to meet with Waterval High School's governing body to address the closure of classrooms deemed unsafe by the Department of Employment and Labour.

Limpopo MEC for Education Ms Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya is expected to meet the school governing body (SGB) of Waterval High School on Monday following the closure of classrooms declared unsafe by the Department of Employment and Labour last week.

Learners have since been relocated to six mobile classrooms and neighbouring schools, including Hlalelani Primary School, after safety inspections found several structures unsafe for teaching and learning.

Waterval High School has faced infrastructure challenges for years, with learners attending classes in buildings with cracked walls, leaking roofs and damaged floors despite repeated requests for intervention.

The meeting between Lerule-Ramakhanya and the SGB comes days after Limpopo Mirror reported on the deteriorating conditions at the school and the closure of classrooms following inspections by labour and safety officials.

According to an internal programme seen by Limpopo Mirror, the meeting will include remarks by the SGB, updates from the Department of Education, stakeholder discussions and a walkabout at Waterval High School and Hlalelani Primary School.

The engagement is expected to focus on intervention plans and the way forward following the closure of the unsafe infrastructure.
