In the rhythmic heartbeat of South Africa's vibrant music scene, one name has been steadily turning heads, moving feet and taking over playlists — Mickeyblack. Known for her genre-bending amapiano sound, unapologetic authenticity and unmistakable energy both on and off stage, she is fast becoming one of the most influential voices in local music.
Her journey, however, is not one of overnight success. It is a story coloured by dreams, a love for performance and a surprising twist of fate that led her to embrace a genre she never imagined would define her career.
"Honestly, it felt unreal but also fantastic," she said, reflecting on the wave of attention she is currently riding. "It is something I had always dreamed of."
That dream now lives in studio sessions filled with collaboration, features on hit tracks and performances that capture the spirit of modern-day amapiano. But how does one keep the creative flame burning in an industry that demands constant reinvention?
"I focus on just being myself and bring out all the energy and love I have for what I do," said Mickeyblack. "There is no formula — just raw passion and a deep commitment to staying true to my artistry."
Surprisingly, she confesses that she did not always understand the genre she now thrives in. "Honestly, no," she said, when asked if she foresaw amapiano taking her this far. "I did not really understand this genre until this one time in studio — and it just sounded good."
That moment sparked something extraordinary. Today, her sound carries a signature energy that fans can recognise almost instantly. She draws inspiration from a unique mix of sources. "Friends, church, family and all the news around the world provide the intimacy and relevance to my music," she said.
In the world of features, Mickeyblack has already ticked off some exciting names. "So far, I have loved working with Mizo and Fortunator," she said. Yet the dream remains alive to collaborate with industry powerhouses such as Nkosazana Daughter and Mawhoo. If her current momentum is anything to go by, those dream collaborations may not be far off.
Mickeyblack's presence extends beyond her sound. Her style — while not something she claims to be intentional about — has become a natural extension of her brand. "I am not really a style or fashion person," she admitted with a laugh. "I just make sure I am decent looking, hey, so I cannot really say how much it is a part of my brand." It is this realness that draws people in.
Despite the success and growing influence, Mickeyblack remains humbled by the love she receives. "It feeeeellllssssss soooooo good, wonderful and great," she said, visibly touched.
There is a strong sense of pride when she speaks about representing her community and upbringing. "It means never hiding where you are from and where you grew up, hey," she said.
In an amapiano landscape that shifts at lightning speed, Mickeyblack is determined not to lose herself in the frenzy. "I do not go by its speed, hey," she said. "I tell it how it should be for me. I command it, because I am the lady with the talent and power."
As for what lies ahead — Mickeyblack is planning to release an EP. "There is a lead single already out in people's ears — it is called Vha Rabelaho, and I worked with Ramzin and DJ Search on it," she revealed. "After that, we give everyone the full experience. God is making a way — He is preparing. I am just trusting in Him."
