A young visual artist from Miluwani village near Sibasa, Mudinda Maumela (31), is proving that, with talent, hard work, and determination, it is possible to create job opportunities for yourself — even in the rural areas.

Born and raised in Hamashamba Doli outside Makhado, Maumela discovered his love for art as a young boy while observing the work at Mashamba Pottery. With no formal training, he taught himself the skills of painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture by watching others.

His artistic journey took a significant step forward when he moved to Miluwani and met veteran sculptor and mentor Avhashoni Mainganye at the Thohoyandou Arts and Culture Centre. "It was like a dream come true when I met Mainganye. He saw my talent and wanted to help me sharpen my skills in painting, pottery, and ceramics," said Maumela.

Under Mainganye's guidance, Maumela's work has grown in popularity. His art has been exhibited at the Thohoyandou Arts and Culture Centre, the Melrose Art Gallery in Johannesburg, and the Vhembe Craft Market held at the Thohoyandou Botanical Gardens in June this year.

In 2022, his growing reputation was recognised when he was selected for the Sasol New Signatures Awards at the Pretoria Art Museum.

Maumela, who specialises in watercolour and oil painting, printmaking, and wood and plastic sculpture, encourages young people to follow their passion, even when faced with financial obstacles. "You can overcome unemployment and create your own job, but you need to be creative, work hard, and be patient. Sometimes it takes time before you see results," he said.

Besides being a dedicated artist, Maumela also has a passion for fitness. He has been training at the gym daily since 2013, which eventually led him to take up boxing under well-known coach Smoking Joe Nemakonde.

According to Mainganye, Maumela's future looks bright. "He is a hardworking young man, and if given the opportunity, he will achieve greatness," said Mainganye.
