Chauke secured 38 votes and pledged to address critical issues such as water supply and infrastructure, calling for unity to build a prosperous Vhembe.

The political reshuffle at the Vhembe District Municipality has materialised with Cllr Miyelani Chauke officially elected as the new executive mayor, replacing Cllr Tsakani Fredah Nkondo.

Chauke was elected during a council sitting where nominees were put forward by the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). He secured 38 votes, while the EFF candidate received six votes.

His election follows weeks of speculation over Nkondo’s political future amid reports of deepening divisions within the ANC in the region.

Although no official announcement had initially been made regarding her removal, highly placed ANC insiders previously indicated that discussions around leadership changes within the municipality were intensifying behind closed doors.

Sources alleged that tensions escalated following recent ANC provincial and regional elective outcomes, which reportedly shifted the balance of power within the party. According to insiders, some factions were pushing for changes in strategic positions across the region.

Nkondo became executive mayor in November 2023 following the resignation of Dowelani Nenguda, but reportedly came under increasing political pressure in recent months.

While some within the ANC linked the discussions to ongoing service delivery challenges, particularly persistent water shortages affecting communities across Vhembe, others maintained that the developments were largely driven by internal factional battles rather than governance concerns alone.

At the time, Chauke had already emerged as a possible replacement for Nkondo should changes be effected.

Following his swearing-in, Chauke thanked councillors for the confidence placed in him.

“I am deeply humbled and profoundly grateful for the trust you have placed in me by electing me as the Executive Mayor of Vhembe District Municipality,” he said.

He said communities in Vhembe needed reliable water supply, sustainable infrastructure, economic opportunities and dignified living conditions.

“These are not privileges, but basic rights,” he said.

Chauke also acknowledged the work of previous leaders and called for unity going forward.

“In this new chapter, let us remain focused, disciplined, and united. Together, we can build a Vhembe that is prosperous, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of its people,” he said.

The municipality confirmed Chauke’s election in a statement issued by its communication services division.
