Venda Football Club (VFC) has reason to be concerned after suffering a humiliating 1-2 defeat against Orbit College FC in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League match at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday. With this loss, VFC now sit in the last position on the league standings with 19 points.
During an interview with the head coach of the team, Mr Duncan Lechesa, he attributed the defeat to his players' performance. According to him, the players shifted to a defensive style of play after scoring their solitary goal, which ultimately led to their downfall.
When questioned about the team's chances of qualifying for the promotional playoffs under the current circumstances, Lechesa emphasised that their immediate focus is on lifting the team from the relegation zone.
On the other hand, Orbit College's head coach, Mr Pogiso Makhoye, praised his players for their performance. He noted that VFC was the first team to defeat them at home during a first-round league match, and he was pleased that his team could retaliate with a victory on Saturday. Makhoye expressed their ambition to make history by playing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship League for one season and then securing promotion to the elite division.
Orbit College FC, newcomers to the league, earned their spot after an impressive performance in the ABC Motsepe League national promotional playoffs at the end of last season.
VFC's only goal came from Tshovelo Mathebula two minutes into the game, giving them an early lead that they held until half time. However, Orbit College's Thuso Moleleki scored a brace in the second half, securing a 2-1 victory for the visiting team.
