Mpheni Academy FC emerged as champions of the Zwithuzwintha Media and Projects Top-16 Soccer Tournament after defeating Nthabalala United 2–1 in the final at Phophi Stadium in Vleifontein on Sunday.
During the prize-giving ceremony, Ms Thendo Nditwani, managing director of the sponsors, announced that her company would continue sponsoring the rural tournament next season, with an increased sponsorship amount. “We are part of this community, and we are doing this to support local people,” she said.
The champions received a floating trophy, R14,000, a soccer kit, and gold medals. Runners-up Nthabalala United received R9,000, a soccer kit, and silver medals. Third- and fourth-placed teams, Mphadzha Try Again and Tshivhuyuni Green Rovers, received R4,000 and R3,000 respectively.
The organising committee chairperson, Tshepo Ramachela, welcomed the support from sports-minded businesspeople and encouraged soccer coaches across the country to visit the area and scout talent. “Good soccer is played here,” he said.
