Mpheni Home Defenders cleared the first hurdle in their quest to be promoted to the ABC Motsepe League by beating the Mpumalanga based Mlambo Royal Cubs 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon. The promotional play-off matches are currently being played at the Harry Gwala stadium in Pietermaritzburg.
The Limpopo side's forwards were in top form as they delivered a clinical display resulting in a series of beautiful goals. Freedom Nyundu opened Defender's account in the 58th minute. The second goal was scored by Gift Nemutandani, while the third was an honour to Nkosiyebo Ndlovu. Nemutandani complete his brace and scored his team fourth goal.
The team's head coach, Sydwell Phuravhathu is confident that the team will make the province proud at the play-offs. "We believe we have the capacity and the experience to win the contest. We had a good season, we qualified for the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup and I believe that experience will come in handy during the play-offs," Phuravhathu said.
Later today (8 June) Mpheni Home Defenders come up against Orbit College from North West. The match is scheduled to start at 12:30. Mpheni need to win or draw the game to proceed to the next round.
