Former learners of Mphephu High School have joined forces to improve the school and its Grade 12 results.
The ex-pupils gathered on Saturday, 9 November, at Madi a Thavha lodge outside Louis Trichardt to discuss steps to support the school. Mphephu High has been considered one of the leading schools in the Vhembe District for many years. Despite its previous achievements, the school faces serious challenges, ranging from infrastructure development to the need for teaching aids.
The group, who call themselves the Mphephu High Former Students, believe much can be done to help the school. The group's chairperson, Mr. Eddy Singo, said their first task would be to conduct an assessment and make recommendations on what needs to be done. "We will approach various sponsors to come on board, so we can raise funds to improve the school. As a former student of this school, I feel very strongly that something needs to be done to improve the learning conditions here. We need quality education and a conducive learning environment," he said.
Singo added that the newly elected committee would work with various stakeholders. "This committee is not a standalone structure. It will work together with the school-governing body, the local traditional council, SANCO, the Nzhelele Education Forum, various community structures and interested individuals with the common goal of reviving the school's legacy. We invite everyone who has the interests of Mphephu High School at heart to join us in this venture," he said.
He also encouraged learners to focus on their studies and respect their teachers. "What happened is all in the past. We now have a chance to start again and work harder to achieve better results." Singo further encouraged parents to play an active role in their children's education. "Monitor how your children are performing in school. Ask them how things are going with their schoolwork, as many learners suffer in silence," he said.
