Amapiano star MphoEL is fast carving out a name for himself with a string of standout features and a distinct vocal style. Fresh from releasing his latest project, he spoke to Limpopo Mirror about his journey, challenges and vision for the future.

The new body of work, produced with long-time collaborator Ubber Black, was more than a year in the making. "We delayed the release because we wanted everything perfect in terms of mixing and mastering," he says. "I wanted listeners to notice my true potential in making Piano, and most importantly, the versatility that I possess."

The project saw him explore new sonic ground. "The sound was more dynamic than usual. Although I am not known for making soulful Piano, I was able to include a few soulful songs," he says. Van Gee handled the mixing and mastering.

For MphoEL, music began as a hobby before becoming a calling. "I used to do it just for fun, but in 2023, I made some important decisions and sacrifices. That was when I realised I had a bigger purpose in the game." He adds: "Failing and having the ability to bounce back has defined me. Setbacks shaped the artist I am today."

Despite making groove-ready tracks for clubs, his roots are in a religious family, with his father leading his own church. Collaborations have also played a big role in his rise. "The Capable Boyz collabs stood out because they introduced me to the industry and to fans."

Asked what makes him unique, he says: "My voice and style of singing always stand out. In features, I make sure to bring my A game and still fit into the collective sound." A career highlight came through a track with industry powerhouses Kelvin Momo and Stixx.

Looking ahead, he hopes to expand beyond South Africa. "I see my music taking the world by storm on a continental level," he says. But he also wants to help shape the next wave of stars. "I want to be one of the powerhouses who guide younger artists and help them make waves on big stages."

His advice to upcoming artists: "Do not be afraid to be different or to fail. Be yourself and do not be influenced by what everyone else is doing. Failure is a lesson to re-collect and re-strategise."
