The astonishing artwork of an emerging visual artist from Mahatlani, Mpimo Honwani, is capturing the attention and admiration of more people by the day. The talented 21-year-old uses art to narrate his own life journey.

Mpimo paints with acrylic, watercolours, and fabric paints, and sculpts with epoxy resin and sometimes waste materials. "I get a lot of compliments from my customers, who often suggest that I also do something for their friends," he said.

He remembers how his passion for art was sparked during his preschool days and how it just kept growing over the years. "My gift was evident on my first day of school, when the whole class had to draw a human figure with crayons. The figure I drew won our group first place, which made me realise the talent God had bestowed upon me," he said.

This fuelled his interest in art even more and he continued to hone his talent. In 2020, he matriculated from Marholeni High School and enrolled in the Nelson Mandela University's visual arts course in 2021.

His two cousins, Xilaveko and Cody Honwani, encouraged him to keep going. "They would always come to me with something to draw or do for them, even if it was not school related. All they really wanted was for me to keep practising my skills as an artist," he said.

Mpimo is currently working on a project where he combines old and modern techniques to create a single, remarkable piece of art.
