Popular Limpopo-based rhumba musician Clement Simbine, popularly known as Mu Africa Marko, is using his latest single, Bluetooth, to address what he describes as the growing breakdown of trust and commitment in modern relationships.
Released a month ago and recorded at Mphagani Studios in Muledane, the song continues Marko’s tradition of tackling topical social issues through music. In Bluetooth, the veteran musician reflects on the changing nature of love and relationships, lamenting what he sees as a decline in loyalty among couples.
“There is no longer certainty in relationships today,” said Marko. “People fall in love today and get married, but the union does not last. Much of this is caused by unfaithfulness and cheating between partners,” he said.
Marko believes the erosion of trust between partners has contributed to the rise of gender-based violence and violent conflict in relationships.
“This is what is leading to many incidents of gender-based violence and killings. We need to go back to the values of our grandparents’ generation, where commitment, patience and respect were the foundation of marriage,” he said.
Backing him on the production is his trusted family band, with Willard Simbine on lead guitar, Raymond Simbine on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Joshua Simbine on drums, while Marko himself played bass guitar and handled lead vocals. Additional backing vocals were provided by Raymond Simbine and producer Mmbangiseni Mphaga.
Since its release, Bluetooth has received an enthusiastic response from fans, with growing demand for live performances.
Marko expressed gratitude to his long-time colleagues, including Amos Ngomane, Mmbangiseni Mphaga, Takalani Gabs Mashau and his family, for their continued encouragement throughout his career.
