Mudzunga debut book captures life shaped by her grief

Ronewa Mudzunga's debut poetry collection, "Kaleidoscope," explores personal experiences of grief, poverty, and rural life. Her work, reflecting on loss and hardship, ultimately offers a message of hope and encouragement through education.

A young writer from Tshivhulani has published a debut poetry collection drawing on personal experiences of grief, poverty and growing up in a rural household. Ronewa Mudzunga’s book, Kaleidoscope: Stories Told in Pieces, was published on April 6.

The collection follows a young adult navigating life’s challenges, including loss, hunger, unemployment and social pressures. Mudzunga said her writing is shaped by her early experiences. “I experienced grief at a younger age and the hardships I faced during the healing process motivated me to share the journey with other people,” she said.

She said growing up in a household without a stable income influenced her work. She added that her parents relied on piece jobs and entrepreneurship to make a living. Mudzunga said they sometimes could not make ends meet, which affected their access to proper nutrition and shelter.

While the poems explore difficult themes, they also carry a sense of hope. “The shift from hopelessness to encouragement is influenced by my trust in education. I believe that hope is not all lost,” she said.

Mudzunga said she ends many of her poems with a sense of possibility. “I end most of the poems with a glimpse of sunlight as encouragement that our today is not our tomorrow or our future,” she said. Now based in Tembisa and studying at the University of the Witwatersrand, she said the move from rural to urban life has shaped her perspective.

“Life in Tembisa is different. People live for themselves. We have forgotten to check on each other,” she said. Mudzunga hopes the book will resonate with young people facing similar struggles.
