Mukula road closed as flooding disrupts traffic in Limpopo

Flooding has closed the P277/1 route at Mukula, causing major disruptions for motorists traveling from Thohoyandou north.

Motorists travelling from Thohoyandou to the north can expect major disruptions after flooding forced the closure of the P277/1 route at Mukula.

The Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed on Monday morning that the road had been temporarily closed due to rising water levels, making it unsafe for vehicles.

Alternative routes have been put in place to ease congestion. Motorists travelling through the area are advised to divert via Mukula James Centre or Usave, proceeding past Matombeni Primary School before joining the Mudagasini D3701 route, which reconnects with the P277/1 towards the Khubvi–Makonde road.

Those travelling from Makonde to Khubvi are urged to use Mukula Cross to access the D3701 Tshaulu route and then reconnect with the main road near Mukula.

Authorities have also raised concerns about dangerous driving conditions on the R524 and R523, where heavy rains have caused potholes and fallen trees, further increasing the risk for motorists.

“The safety of road users remains a priority. We urge all motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly on wet roads,” the department said.

No injuries or fatalities have been reported in connection with the flooding at this stage.

The department said it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as conditions change.
