Mulalo Mukwevho was announced as the winner of the Best Reggae category at the fifth Biennial BVSM Awards, held in Soweto. The awards celebrate outstanding contributions from South African musicians, with a focus on backing vocalists and session musicians, who are often the unsung heroes of the industry.
Mukwevho, the younger brother of Colbert Mukwevho, hails from Thohoyandou and has built a reputation for producing authentic reggae music while honouring his Tshivenda musical roots. Over the years, he has worked with top international, national, and local acts, demonstrating both versatility and professionalism. He has also produced and recorded nearly 65% of the music in the Vhembe district.
The BVSM Awards aim to provide a platform for deserving artists, highlighting both emerging and established talent. By emphasising merit and artistic excellence, the awards shine a light on those who often work behind the scenes, ensuring their contributions are acknowledged and celebrated.
This year's event highlighted the diversity of South Africa's music scene, with nominees spanning jazz, gospel, Afrobeat, and hip-hop. It also demonstrated that regional talent, including artists from provinces such as Limpopo, can compete and excel nationally.
