Munei Nematei from Thohoyandou is a rising star in the fashion-design industry, gaining recognition for his innovative approach to branding.
The 22-year-old is the creative force behind the Yowgaty clothing brand. Despite studying mobile application and web development at Rosebank College, Nematei decided to change course and focus on designing clothes.
Nematei's fashion journey began in 2017 when he was in Grade 8. Since then, he has dressed notable personalities such as comedian and presenter Mpho Popps from "Podcast and Chill" and popular singer and dancer Dr Malinga. "Working with these influential figures has provided valuable opportunities to showcase the unique vision and quality of my clothing brand. Their trust in my designs highlights the brand's commitment to excellence and innovative fashion," he said.
Since its inception, Yowgaty has been dedicated to creating distinctive apparel that combines innovative graphic design with contemporary fashion trends. "Each piece is crafted to tell a story and allow the wearer to express their individuality," said Nematei.
Inspired by big brands like Galxboy, Boys of Soweto, Maxhosa, and Louis Vuitton, Nematei emphasises the importance of authenticity and originality. "Witnessing their success fuels my determination to bring fresh, bold ideas to life in my own clothing brand," he said.
Despite financial challenges, Nematei remains dedicated to his mission. "What is special about Yowgaty is that I go for quality, no matter what happens. I would rather not release anything if we can't get quality," he added.
