Vhembe's own long-distance champion, Timothy Munzhelele of Makonde, received a hero's welcome on his return from the Mall of the North Marathon in Polokwane on Saturday.
Munzhelele, who runs in the colours of Vhembe Athletics Club, won the event in a time of 2:29:03.
Almost 2,000 athletes took part in the gruelling race. Munzhelele was modest about his achievement, saying years of hard work and experience in other marathons had helped him claim victory. He added that this year's event had been particularly tough.
"All in all, I had a good race and I'm happy and very excited. It still feels like I am dreaming. I can't believe this has happened to me," he said.
Well-known runner Takalani Mavhona, also from Vhembe Athletics Club, said Munzhelele had deserved the win after representing both the district and Limpopo Province so well.
"As a club, we are very proud of and happy for him. We hope his achievement also inspires others to work hard, so we can produce more winners from this part of the country," he said.
According to Munzhelele, dedication and humility are the true hallmarks of a successful athlete. "Some people say that athletes from Vhembe suffer a lot, and that's why they do well, but I don't think of it like that. I think success comes from what you want in life. The most important thing is to be disciplined, humble, and to listen to your parents and your coach."
He also credited his family for their unwavering support. "I am very grateful for that," he said.
Munzhelele promised fans that he would give his all at the Comrades Marathon in Durban this June. He is still seeking a sponsor to help cover his travel expenses and running gear. Anyone who would like to assist can contact him on (079) 354-0677.
