The brutal killing of a woman by her husband, followed by his subsequent suicide, has sent shockwaves through the Ha-Mashau Misevhe village community outside Louis Trichardt. This horrific act of violence occurred at a time when the entire country is celebrating Women's Month.
The tragic incident, in which 27-year-old Mr Takalani Mufamadi brutally hacked his 25-year-old wife, Ms Gumani Mukwevho, to death with an axe before taking his own life, took place on Saturday, 17 August, at approximately 18:30. Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the incident, stating that a case of murder and suicide had been opened for investigation.
Col Ledwaba said the police had been called to the scene, where they had found the female victim with severe injuries and the male suspect hanging from a rooftop. "The motive behind the incident is currently unknown, but domestic violence is suspected," he said.
Provincial police commissioner Lt-Genl Thembi Hadebe condemned the ongoing incidents of gender-based violence and femicide, particularly within relationships, and urged couples to seek professional help to prevent such tragic outcomes.
The murdered woman's sister, Ms Rendani Mukwevho, said the incident had come as a shock to the family. "They were on good terms, and their relationship dates back to their high school days. We had not heard any complaints from my sister," Mukwevho said.
The death of Mukwevho's sister Gumani is a trying time for the entire family. "My mother is not coping, and the worst part is that he leaves behind two young children who will grow up without parents," she said.
At the time of our going to press, the family was busy making funeral arrangements and said they would welcome any form of assistance in this regard. The late Ms Gumani Mukwevho will be laid to rest on Saturday, 24 August.
Meanwhile, Real Man Foundation founder Mr Itani Nengudza said they were shocked as an organisation. "We are always out there raising awareness in communities about this scourge, but it seems as if there is no end in sight. We urge all men to attend meetings where we discuss these issues. We know there will be challenges between partners, but we must learn how to deal with them in a sober manner," he said.
