Music is a career, but artists must not ignore other opportunities

Pursuing a music career requires acknowledging its slow pace, lack of guarantees, and the slim chance of widespread success. Artists should secure alternative income streams to ensure stability while passionately pursuing their musical dreams. This balanced approach reflects wisdom and long-term planning.

Music can be a career, but it is important to be honest about the realities that come with it. The industry offers opportunities, but it does not come with guarantees.

Success may take years to materialise. For many young artists, the dream of becoming a successful musician often overshadows the practical realities of life. While pursuing that dream is admirable, survival cannot be put on hold. Rent must be paid, food must be bought, and responsibilities do not wait until an artist becomes established.

The truth is that the music industry moves slowly. In some cases, recognition may never come at all. Only a small number of artists manage to break through and achieve widespread success. Even for those who do become successful, the journey is rarely permanent. Trends change, audiences move on, and the spotlight can fade more quickly than expected.

For this reason, artists should think beyond music alone when planning their lives.

Education, employment, and entrepreneurship can provide stability while artists continue to build their craft. Having another source of income does not mean a lack of belief in one’s talent. Instead, it reflects wisdom and long-term thinking.

Young artists must remain passionate and dedicated to their music. They must continue creating, performing, and improving their skills. However, it is equally important to prepare for life beyond the stage.

Dreams are important, but survival is essential. The wisest approach is to pursue music wholeheartedly while also creating other opportunities for financial stability. After all, wise people do not put all their eggs in one basket.
