The death of a respected local businessman in a crash involving a suspected stolen vehicle has sent shockwaves through Tshikhudini in the Musina area, with community leaders describing it as a devastating setback in the fight against crime.
A fatal head-on collision on the Tshipise road near Mananga in the early hours of Tuesday, 21 April, claimed the life of 45-year-old Ndwakhulu Stephans Tshinyelo, a well-known figure in the transport and food sectors. The occupants of the other vehicle, reportedly stolen in Bela-Bela, fled the scene into the bushes on foot and remain at large.
According to police, the suspected stolen vehicle, found abandoned at the scene of the accident, was towed to SAPS facilities as investigations into a case of culpable homicide continue.
Speaking on behalf of the local business community, Mr Philemon Munyai said Stephans’ death was not only a personal loss but a blow to ongoing efforts to combat crime in the area.
“Tshinyelo was a well-respected businessman who invested in both the transport and food industries. He also owned a soccer team that played a critical role in keeping young boys off the streets and away from crime,” said Munyai.
“He was always at the forefront of community initiatives and those aimed at fighting crime. Our pain is deepened by the fact that his life was taken by criminals using a stolen vehicle. Car thieves have robbed us of not just a businessman, but a committed crime fighter,” Munyai added.
Vhembe police spokesperson Captain Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that officers responding to the scene found two vehicles that had collided head-on. Tshinyelo was trapped inside his vehicle and was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical services. He was later identified by his brother.
Police have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Lufunolwawe Rasilingwane, on 079 172 0310.
At the time of going to press, it could not be confirmed whether any suspects had been arrested.
