After close to 25 years in the music industry and with 30 albums under his belt, veteran musician Tendani Phillip Nephawe's music continues to mature like good wine, getting better and better with time.
The artist, better known as Mutendas in Tshivenda soul circles, is back yet again, this time with a seven-track gospel offering titled Madimoni, which he released in December last year.
Madimoni follows the success of his previous offering, Ndi Ngasi Hangwe, in 2021 and, judging by the warm reception and massive airplay it is receiving, it will take Mutendas to a whole new level, with songs such as Madimoni (title track), Yesaya 6 and Muthavhini among the fans' favourites.
Mutendas said that, although he had taken the gospel route, he had not deviated from his usual sound. "I was born and raised in a religious family. My grandfather, Bishop Daniel Malala, was a very religious man of God who planted more than 26 churches all over Limpopo and beyond. He preached the old-time religion that led many to salvation and that is why I did this album and sang about him - to pay tribute to him," he said.
Mutendas said he was worried about today's gospel which, in his opinion, was all about prosperity and wealth. "People have forsaken God's way and are now following false prophets in search of riches. Some even go to the extent of keeping snakes for the love of instant money. Let us rather look to God for all our needs. He created us for a purpose and his time is the best," Mutendas said.
Mutendas wrote all the songs on Madimoni himself, did the vocals and played the lead and rhythm guitars. Although the album will only be available from February this year, all his previous music is available on digital music platforms.
