A section of the N1 north was closed this morning after a fatal bus accident, some 17 kilometres north of Louis Trichardt at the Ingwe lodge turn-off. Over the years, this notorious stretch of road in the Soutpansberg Mountain pass has claimed many lives.

The accident occurred during the early morning hours of Saturday, 12 February. One person was confirmed dead while another was seriously injured. Fourteen escaped with minor injuries. The bus was travelling north from Johannesburg to the Beit Bridge border post when the accident occurred.

"It is alleged that the bus driver lost control and the bus overturned," said Limpopo Department of Transport spokesperson Mike Maringa. The road is completely closed between the Hendrik Verwoerd Tunnels and the Witvlag road turn-off. Maringa advised motorist to use alternative routes until the road is cleared.
