The N1 near the Witvlag turn-off in the Soutpansberg Mountain Pass was closed on Thursday evening following a serious bus accident involving a Malawian bus travelling to Gauteng.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed that the crash occurred at around 18:00 on Thursday, 7 May.
According to the department, an unconfirmed number of people lost their lives in the accident, while several others sustained injuries. Authorities were still working to determine the exact number of casualties at the time of publication.
Traffic officers, police and emergency personnel rushed to the scene and were managing rescue and recovery operations.
The road remained closed on Thursday evening at the time of publication as emergency teams attended to the situation, causing heavy traffic delays in the area.
Motorists travelling along the route were urged to remain patient and use alternative routes where possible.
Departmental spokesperson Ms Mashudu Mabata said more information would be released once details had been confirmed.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
