The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed that the N1 North through the Soutpansberg mountain pass has reopened to traffic following a serious fatal accident involving a Malawian bus travelling to Gauteng on Thursday evening.
According to the department, traffic is currently flowing through the area, although officials remain on site after a truck became stuck next to the accident scene. Traffic officers are conducting point duty to manage the movement of vehicles and ensure safety.
Motorists have, however, been warned that the road may be closed again at around 10:00 to allow for the recovery of the trailer involved in the accident. Members of the SAPS Dog Unit will, meanwhile, continue searching the area for possible human remains linked to the crash.
The accident occurred at the first Witvlag turn-off outside Louis Trichardt. Preliminary investigations suggest that the crash was caused by mechanical failure.
A number of fatalities have been reported, although the exact number is still being confirmed. A total of 22 people sustained serious injuries, 17 suffered moderate injuries, and five sustained minor injuries. The bus was carrying 61 passengers.
The department has urged motorists travelling through the area to reduce speed, exercise extreme caution, and obey all road safety regulations.
Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
