Joe Maweja started their Amos Charity Tournament programme on a high note. They beat Gwamasenga United Brothers 1-0 at the Tshakhuma Malaria grounds last Saturday.
Although United Brothers are campaigning in the lower division, they managed to match their elder brothers pound for pound from the onset.
United Brothers were good at defence and in the midfield, but their strikers showed no appetite for goals. Tshilidzi Ramatsitsi of United Brothers was a marvel to watch. He was everywhere, playing as a midfielder, while assisting the strikers at the same time. United Brothers committed suicide by taking too long to replace their fast forward, Rudolph Sithole, who was out of touch from the first whistle.
The captain of Joe Maweja, Aluwani Mbedzi, was the first player to be reprimanded with a card. He was warned for a late tackle on Vincent Phalanndwa in the 28th minute. Maweja were the first to effect change to their starting line-up. They replaced Vhutshilo Gabara and Elias Ranwaha with Moses Mathonsi and Sheriff Mudalahothe respectively.
The goal which earned Maweja three vital points came seven minutes into the second half. Mashudu Makhari headed home, following a corner kick by Rudzani Munyai. Tshifhiwa Mudzunga of United Brothers was booked for a continued argument with the referee.
Maweja were reduced to 10 men after their captain, Aluwani Mbedzi, was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence. United Brothers failed to capitalize, as Maweja managed to maintain their lead to the end.
In the other Amos Charity Tournament matches, which were also played at the same venue, Tshakhuma RO United beat Madridtas 2-0, while FC KK lost 2-4 to Tshakhuma Na Ndilani. Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila beatTshivhazwaulu Peace Makers 2-0.
