Parents and community leaders in Nthabalala are concerned that a sports complex started in 2023 by the Makhado Municipality remains unfinished. Despite repeated attempts to follow up the matter, residents say no progress has been made.
The incomplete ground is now used as a grazing field for cattle and goats. It is uneven, lacks infrastructure, and has no goalposts. Children under eight are forced to travel around six kilometres after school - twice a day - to play soccer in the bush.
Parent Tshililo Muthavhini expressed fear for the children's safety. "Our community does not have any place children can go after school. We are begging the municipality to finish the grounds," she said.
Peter Ralutanda of the Nthabalala Development Forum said the only existing sports area had been developed by the community. He warned of additional risks, noting a nearby river where children swim during the rainy season. "We believe sports will help young ones stay off the streets and discover their talents. We tried several times to ask the municipality in Waterval why it's not completed, but with no luck," he said.
Community leaders claim municipal officials told them that graders were not operating. Nthabalala, a rural area with dusty roads, sees heavy trucks transporting sand going back and forth.
An enquiry was sent to municipal spokesperson Mpho Rathando on 11 November, asking about the delay and expected completion, but he has yet to respond, despite multiple follow-ups. Residents say they hope the municipality will act soon to provide a safe space for children to play and develop their talents.
