Gudani Hazel Nemutavhanani (29) wants to see young people in Limpopo, particularly in Vhembe, empower themselves, so that they can be self-reliant instead of waiting for handouts. She believes that her dream will become a reality one day through her initiative, the Far North Youth Empowerment project.
The idea of establishing an NGO that deals with issues affecting young people was conceived in June 2022 after Nemutavhanani realized how many young people lacked certain skills to survive. "With June being Youth Month, we all need to redouble our efforts to ensure that young people are prepared for a future of self-reliance, especially in these tough economic times. If young people receive the necessary support, it would be easier for them to fully contribute to the economic development of our country."
Nemutavhanani, originally from Dzimauli but now based in Musina, says Far North Youth Empowerment organises empowerment sessions such as skills development workshops and information sessions for the youth in various areas around Vhembe. The organisation also focuses on issues such as eradicating drug abuse and teenage pregnancies among young people. "If we have young people who can create their own jobs, we will be able to tackle poverty head-on, thereby improving the standard of life. The issues of drug abuse and teenage pregnancies are a thorn in the flesh, and all of us need to come together for this common cause."
However, she mentions that, because of a lack of funds and resources, building a strong team to realise her dreams is very difficult. "Sometimes I get a few colleagues to work with me, but most of them don't stay because I can't offer them compensation for their efforts. That is why I find myself doing everything on my own most of the time. Another challenge is that I don't have an office space to operate from, but because I have a burning desire to change the lives of young people, I never give up, and I continue running the project from my own handbag," she said.
She asks that young people and organisations who want to partner with her contact her on 076 155 2355 (voice calls and WhatsApp). She is also available on Facebook (Lezah Lee).
