The executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, visited several water projects in Musina last Tuesday.

He was accompanied by the municipality's acting municipal manager, Ms Sylvia Ndou, and other officials.

The delegation visited a pump station that is situated along the Limpopo River, which supplies water to the people of Musina.

Workers told the delegation that the facility, situated in the dense bush just a stone's throw from Zimbabwe, was facing challenges of vandalism and theft of copper wire, allegedly by Zimbabwean nationals. The workers also said that some of the 15 boreholes drilled along the Limpopo River were being vandalised, presumably by the same people.

The other challenge is that the boreholes produce little water during the dry season in winter. "During rainy days, the pipes are washed away by the river," said the workers.

The workers said the existing boreholes were not enough for the community as they only produced half of what was needed.

Nenguda said another 10 boreholes would be drilled in the coming financial year to make sure that the water challenges facing Musina community were resolved. He also urged the community to help in fighting vandalism of water resources and theft of cables and transformers.

"I am also calling on community members to avoid destroying resources whenever they run short of water and other needs as it drags us back in terms of service delivery," he added.
