Chief Ntikedzeni Muraga-Mphaphuli of Ha Muraga outside Thohoyandou said the inauguration of headman Ramaphege Netshianzwane was a traditional mandate and a contribution to the cultural rebirth of the Muraga people.
Muraga was speaking during the inauguration of the headman at the local sport grounds of Tshianzwane in Muraga at the weekend.
He was installed amidst cultural fanfare during a function that was attended by traditional leaders from the surrounding villages under Mphaphuli, leader of the UACC, Bishop MM Miriri, local businesspeople who supported the ceremony and many community members.
The local traditional leader, Chief Ntikedzeni Muraga-Mphaphuli, who officiated, said the position of headman became vacant after the passing away of Netshianzwane's father, Tsumbedzo Ramaphege Netshianzwane, in 1985. Since then, there had not been a replacement.
"We are following tradition. Headmen form a very important part in traditional leadership. As chief I cannot see all that is happening in the village. The headmen are our eyes and inform us of everything that happens on the ground. He will be of great use to us and the community," Chief Ntikedzeni Muraga-Mphaphuli said.
Vhakoma Vho Nemadandila Mudau told the new headman to work tirelessly for the benefit of his people.
In response, the newly installed Netshianzwane said he would remain a subject to his chief. "Our installation means a lot and is a challenge. We have to work extra hard for development in our area, and this we cannot do alone," he said.
