What many men struggle to achieve, local clay target shot Samantha Pennells (18) made look easy when she shot a 98 out of a possible 100 points in the trench section of the Chairman's Cup held at the De Beers Club in Kimberley on November 24 and 25.

Samantha, together with father Howard Pennells from Makhado (Louis Trichardt), competed in the Chairman's Cup as part of the provincial team. Her 98/100 in the trench section is a new South African women's record, the previous record being 94/100. According to mother Linda Pennells, the whole competition came to a standstill when Samantha shot the new record as fellow shots gave her a round of applause.

Samantha also received her first Protea colours, while Howard received Protea colours for the sixth time. This time, the national colours were handed to Howard for his skill in the DTL (Down the Line) section, although he has received national colours in several other disciplines of clay target shooting.
