The community of Dzwerani Mvelaphanda, a closely knit and peaceful village near Vuwani, has faced significant challenges over the past three years. Since the passing of their traditional leader, Vhamusanda Vho Mmbangiseni Tshimangadzo Solomon Khangale, in 2022 at the age of 70, the royal council had been managing the village's affairs.

Last Saturday, however, marked a turning point for the community as a new traditional leader was officially installed.

During a ceremony attended by leaders from neighbouring villages and numerous community members, Mr Mpho Khangale was inaugurated as the new traditional leader. Lwamondo's senior traditional leader, Thovhele Calvin Nelwamondo, officiated the installation, bestowing upon him the title Vhamusanda Vho Ranwedzi.

In addition to the new leader's appointment, Mr Collen Khangale was named ndumi (the leader's personal assistant), while Ms Takalani Netshivhale was appointed khadzi (the leader's sister).

In an interview with Limpopo Mirror following his inauguration, Vhamusanda Vho Ranwedzi outlined his vision for the community. He highlighted the pressing issues faced by the village, including the lack of water and inadequate roads. "As a rural community, we are at a disadvantage when it comes to development. Like many other rural villages in Vhembe, we still lack access to water, and our roads leave much to be desired," he said.

He stressed the importance of collaborating with both district and local municipalities to address these challenges. "My people cannot continue to endure these hardships—being without water and proper roads—after so many years of democracy. This must change. They deserve to enjoy the benefits of our freedom," he said.

Vhamusanda Vho Ranwedzi added that his first priority was to consult with the royal council and other key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan for the village's future.
