At a time when traditional leadership among the Vhavenda is mired in controversy and succession disputes, the Khosikhulu Pfareli of the Vhavenda, Vho Japan Mphephu-Ramabulana, has called on royal families to unite and resolve matters of succession internally, without resorting to the courts.

Vho Mphephu-Ramabulana was addressing a large crowd at the installation of the new traditional leader of Matanda village, Vhamusanda Vho Ntanganedzeni Maphaha. The village falls under the Dzanani Tribal Council, and the ceremony took place on Saturday, 19 April, at the Matanda Sports Grounds.

The inauguration was officiated by Khosikhulu Mphephu-Ramabulana and Makhadzi Tshamano Maphaha. Dignitaries in attendance included the South African Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, Thovhele Nthumeni Masia, and several other traditional leaders. During the ceremony, Phophi Maphaha was named khadzi (senior female advisor), while Isiah Mulaudzi was named ndumi (right-hand man or headman).

Japan Mphephu-Ramabulana emphasised that, traditionally, succession to the throne in Vhavenda culture is a matter to be resolved within the family, involving khadzis and makhotsimunene (paternal uncles). "It should be the family that decides who is the rightful heir to the throne, not the courts," he said.

Vhamusanda Maphaha succeeds his late father, Vhamusanda Seth Mahadulula II Maphaha, who passed away in 2022.

Mphephu-Ramabulana urged the new leader to respect the community members he serves. "Young traditional leaders like Ntanganedzeni Maphaha, with fresh ideas, can help bring progress," he said.

Thovhele Nthumeni Masia, in a message of support, thanked Mphephu-Ramabulana for handling the installation. He encouraged the Maphaha clan to support the new leader and to seek wisdom from God during his tenure.

Makhadzi Tshamano Maphaha welcomed Vhamusanda Ntanganedzeni Maphaha to his new role, expressing hope that he would contribute meaningfully to the development of the area.

"Our communities need water, better roads, and electricity," she said. "We hope you, along with your advisors and local leaders, will represent your people effectively during integrated development plan consultations with municipalities across the Vhembe region and advocate for priority projects."
