A new traditional leader, Vhamusanda Vho Ntanganedzeni Nevondo, was installed at Vondo la Fhasi on Saturday, 21 December. He succeeds his father, the late Vhamusanda David Nevondo, who passed away in November 2023.
During the ceremony, which was held at the Vondo la Fhasi Sports Grounds, the new leader assured local residents that he would listen to the elderly members of his clan while ruling to the best of his ability. He identified water shortages and poor roads as some of the most pressing issues to be addressed. "We will engage with the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) to address the water problems," said Vhamusanda Nevondo.
During the ceremony, Ms Pretty Nevondo was named khadzi, and Phumudzo Nevondo was appointed ndumi.
Vhamusanda Vho Muonyolosi Budeli, who conducted the ritual and also represented Thovhele Midiyavhathu Kennedy Tshivhase, said the new traditional leader must respect his community and listen to the elders for advice. "There is a Tshivenda saying, 'Vhathu ndi mapfura, vhaadoliwa,' meaning people are like oil and should be handled with care," he said.
He encouraged the new leader to create jobs through community-development projects. "You will be the leader of all people living in your village, rich or poor, and I urge you to treat them with respect and demonstrate your wisdom," said Budeli.
