Before the applause, the international interviews and the millions of views, musician Newie had one simple message: do not lose hope.
Today, that message has grown into a global movement. Her hit single Song of Hope (Zwi Do Luga) has surpassed eight million views on YouTube, a milestone few independent artists from Limpopo achieve.
For Newie, the success still feels surreal.
“Indeed it’s a dream come true. I have never experienced this in my whole career,” she said.
What makes the song’s success remarkable is that it arrived at a time when people across the world are searching for encouragement. Wars, economic uncertainty, unemployment and the daily struggles of ordinary people have left many yearning for reassurance that better days still lie ahead.
That universal longing gave birth to Zwi Do Luga, which loosely conveys the message that things will eventually work out and that hope remains alive.
Known for her deeply spiritual gospel music, Newie says the song represents an expansion rather than a departure from her roots.
“The message of hope is still good news to those who listen to it. Hope is only found in God,” she said.
The track, produced alongside DJ Maryko, has reached audiences far beyond South Africa’s borders. Newie says she now receives testimonies from listeners around the world almost daily, with many describing how the song has carried them through difficult moments.
The viral success has also opened doors she never imagined. In just two months, she has received invitations to perform internationally and interview requests from media platforms in the Caribbean, Jamaica and the United States. Several companies have also approached her with ambassadorial proposals.
For the Limpopo-born musician, the eight-million-view milestone carries an important lesson.
“If you have an idea to expand your knowledge and your skill, do not be afraid to try it out because that might be your only breakthrough.”
