Nkondo faces the axe amidst ANC internal fighting

Vhembe District Municipality Executive Mayor Tsakani Fredah Nkondo faces potential removal amidst deepening ANC divisions and power struggles following recent elective outcomes.

The political future of Vhembe District Municipality Executive Mayor Tsakani Fredah Nkondo hangs in the balance amid growing reports of deepening divisions within the ANC in the region.

Although no official decision has been announced, highly placed ANC insiders say discussions around Nkondo’s possible removal from office are intensifying behind closed doors.

Sources allege that tensions escalated following recent ANC provincial and regional elective outcomes, which are believed to have shifted the balance of power within the party.

Insiders claim some factions are now pushing for leadership changes in strategic positions across the region.

Nkondo, who became executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality in November 2023 following the resignation of Dowelani Nenguda, has reportedly come under increasing political pressure in recent months.

While some within the ANC have linked the discussions to ongoing service delivery challenges, particularly persistent water shortages affecting communities across Vhembe, others insist the matter is largely driven by internal factional battles rather than governance concerns alone.

It is believed that Mabanana Chauke is a possible replacement for Nkondo as VDM mayor, should changes be effected.

Efforts to obtain comment from ANC Vhembe regional spokesperson Frank Tshililo were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off.

This is a developing story.
