A resident of the Tsianda area, Azwindini Mulaudzi (44), appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of allegedly raping two children, aged seven and 11.

The case was postponed to 1 September and Mulaudzi stays in custody, as bail was denied.

The provincial commissioner, General Nneke Ledwaba, has sent a clear message to all men that the police are more than determined than ever to stop the scourge of gender-based violence. He thanked all law-enforcement officials for their determination in rooting out criminality wherever it manifests.

He said that the two children had immediately been taken to the Victim Empowerment Centre and the relevant stakeholders had already been engaged.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms the abuse of children and the seemingly immoral tendencies of older men taking advantage of the most vulnerable members of the society. The swift reaction by police members who received the report is commendable," concluded Ledwaba.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo emphasised that crimes against women and children are a national priority and that the police would "leave no stone unturned" until all men who were still abusing women and children were brought to book.
