Xitsonga poet and storyteller Hlayisani Antonette Shiburi, popularly known as N'wa Jika The Poet Phyembye Ra Africa, was honoured with her 14th award at the African Honoree Awards held at Sandton Library on 31 July.
The 35-year-old artist from Madobi village was recognised for her ongoing contribution to African literature, culture and indigenous storytelling.
Renowned for her powerful and emotive Xitsonga poetry, Shiburi uses her voice to uplift, heal and connect with audiences across generations. Over the years, she has become a respected figure in Limpopo's cultural landscape. She is also a praise poet, author, actress, motivational speaker, MC, voice-over artist and community builder. Outside the arts, she is a qualified electrician.
"Receiving my 14th award as an author and poet is a moment I will treasure. Each award carries a unique story, and this one reminds me that every word I've written has not been in vain," she said.
She dedicated the award to everyone who has supported her journey. "It's for every person who believed in my gift, every audience that listened, and every young poet who sees their dream in my story."
In 2022, she launched Switirhela Ku Lulama, a clothing brand, and founded N'wa Jika The Poet NPC to further her mission of empowerment and cultural preservation. "Looking back, my journey started with a simple passion to express and connect. I never imagined my poetry would touch lives beyond my village," she said.
She also thanked Anthea Thyssen Ambursley, organiser of the African Honoree Awards, for creating a platform that celebrates African creatives. "To anyone walking their journey of purpose: keep going. Your story counts," she said.
