Ms Joyce Makhado, a 71-year-old pensioner from Tshivhilwi Dzhemeni outside Thohoyandou, had a simple desire in life - to have a decent home for her retirement. She struggled for 15 years to build her dream house, which started with just one room. Over time, she systematically added five more rooms until her house was finally complete. However, her dream was shattered last week when her hard work and all the money invested in her home went up in flames, destroying everything she owned.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 6 June, at around 07:00. Nobody was home at the time, so nothing could be saved from the raging fire. The family members are now left without food, clothing, and shelter, completely destitute.

While the cause of the fire is unknown, the family suspects an electrical fault. Makhado's son, Mr Prince Nemasetoni, received a call while he was working in the village, informing him about the fire. He rushed to the scene, finding neighbours helplessly watching as the flames consumed the house. Because no water was available, they were unable to do anything to stop the fire. The fire appeared to have started in the sitting room, but they cannot be certain of the exact cause.

Nemasetoni expressed his mother's devastation. She was visiting relatives in Modimolle (Nylstroom) when the incident occurred. "My mother is in a terrible state. She can't come to terms with the fact that everything she worked for over so many years is now gone. It took her 15 years to complete the house, and witnessing her dream reduced to ashes is something she cannot accept. Rebuilding the house is out of the question. I have also lost all my valuables, including laptops containing my college work. We are shattered as a family and are seeking assistance in any way possible. Currently, we are relying on our councillor, who collected our information and promised to follow up," he said.

Nemasetoni mentioned that the police had discouraged them from opening a case as the family did not suspect any foul play. When asked to confirm the fire, Vhembe SAPS acting spokesperson Sergeant Vuledzani Dathi was surprised to learn that no case had been opened.
