The reopening of a satellite police station at Phiphidi, outside Thohoyandou, brought a sigh of relief to the crime-ridden village.

The reopening of a satellite police station at Phiphidi, outside Thohoyandou, brought a sigh of relief to the crime-ridden village.

The village used to have a satellite police station that made it easier for locals to report cases and carry out basic tasks such as affidavits. But years ago, it was burnt down. Since then, residents have had to travel to the distant Thohoyandou Police Station for services.

This is now history.

On Saturday, 18 May, a new era dawned when Vhembe SAPS's top brass and key leadership, community structures, traditional leaders and many community members witnessed the official opening of the "new" satellite police office.

Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Sgt Manamela Maphure said the initiative represented a collaborative effort between the SAPS and the Phiphidi community, with local residents and business owners volunteering their resources to renovate a former school building for use as the satellite office. "Community members participated in cleaning operations, painting, and replacing broken windows to ensure the facility meets safety standards," he said.

Speaking during the official opening, Brig Simon Mukwevho, station commissioner at Thohoyandou Police Station, described the initiative as a significant stride in the fight against crime.

"This satellite office demonstrates what can be achieved when police and communities work together toward a common goal of enhancing public safety. The establishment of this facility will significantly improve police response times and service delivery in Phiphidi and surrounding villages," he said.

Community leader Ms Naledzani Mulelu praised the police for listening to their plea.

"Since our satellite office was burnt years ago, we have never had peace. So many people have been killed and many other crimes like housebreaking and muggings, among others, have been the order of the day. With the new satellite office here, we are very confident there will be a decline in crime. We are also appreciative of the initiative as we will no longer have to travel far for services. This will not only assist us but will also come in handy for our neighbouring villages," she said.

As a temporary measure, a mobile community service centre vehicle will be deployed to the satellite office daily during business hours to provide essential police services, while permanent infrastructure for water and electricity is being established.
