Even though the community of Makhado Park had been relieved of spilled sewage on the corner of Fisant and Troupant Street last month, residents are pleading with the municipality to complete this job, as there is still a pool of stagnant, smelly water where the sewage spilled out.
"Since 2019 we have been reporting the sewage overflow at that spot, but the municipality took their time in fixing it. Residents could not enjoy meals or go outside because of the smell coming from the sewage," said Tshifhiwa Fambe, deputy chairperson of Makhado Park civic organisation.
Fambe said that they are not even sure whether the municipality really fixed the sewage spill properly.
Limpopo Mirror visited Makhado Park on Sunday, 7 February and found the stagnant sewage water still dammed up at the same spot, on the corner of Fisant and Troupant Street, where it was fixed a month ago. There seemed to have been some work done, but the drainage that is supposed to flow away from the road is blocked by sand.
"We really cannot allow our children to play outside. We are afraid that they will go and play in that dirty water. The place is now a mosquito breeding place. Most people around this place are forced to close windows all the time. We cannot enjoy relaxing outside our homes because of the smell. Can the municipality come and complete their job?" asked a woman who lives close to this stagnant, bad-smelling mess.
Spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Matodzi Ralushai, responded to Limpopo Mirror's enquiry and said that the municipality was not aware of the stagnant water issue. He promised that the technical services staff will act on the matter as soon as possible.
