A 25-year-old man faced the fury of enraged community members from Hasani Mbhalati, located outside Malamulele, as he was assaulted and subsequently set on fire on Saturday, 12 August. The incident took place at approximately 16:30.
The deceased individual has been identified as Doctor Maswanganyi (25) of Hasani Mbhalati. Based on information obtained by the Limpopo Mirror, the community accused Maswanganyi of involvement in the murder of a local elderly woman, Ms Maria Hlungwani (63), which occurred on 19 July this year. Hlungwani's lifeless body, wrapped in traditional cloth, was discovered in a drainage pipe by community members.
The exact circumstances surrounding Hlungwani's death and the connection to Maswanganyi remain unclear, but community members insist on his involvement. Prior to his tragic death on Saturday, community members had even besieged the Vuwani Police Station, suspecting that he had sought refuge there to escape the angry mob.
The incident received strong condemnation from Limpopo Police Commissioner Lt Genl Thembi Hadebe, who characterised it as vigilantism and an act of individuals' taking the law into their own hands. Hadebe emphasised that community members must grasp that this form of action is criminal. She further stated, "Perpetrators of this crime will be arrested. The community must report criminals to the police, who will investigate and arrest the suspects."
The police are urging anyone with information that can assist in the apprehension of the suspects involved to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Thanyani Bakela, at 082 319 9724. Alternatively, individuals can reach out to the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, their local Police Station, or utilize the MySAPSApp to report information.
