Police inspector arrested on murder charge

Police have arrested a 44-year-old police inspector on allegation that he shot and killed a 22-year-old man with his service pistol on February 9.

THOHOYANDOU – Police have arrested a 44-year-old police inspector on allegation that he shot and killed a 22-year-old man with his service pistol on February 9.

It is alleged that the suspect, a member of the SAPS stationed at Tshaulu Police Station, attached to the Crime Prevention Unit, arrived home at around 19:30. He found the 22-year-old man insulting his wife. It is alleged that the deceased accused the inspector's wife of not paying him undisclosed amounts of money owed to him.

The police inspector tried to intervene, but the deceased did not want to listen. It is alleged that the deceased then started throwing stones at the inspector and repeatedly insulted him. The police inspector produced his service pistol and fatally wounded the deceased by shooting him six times.

The police inspector was arrested and had yet to appear in court at the time of going to press.
