A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men in Musina, prompting police to launch a manhunt for her attackers. The alleged attack happened on Saturday, 30 May.
The girl attended a social gathering in Musina on Saturday evening. She then went with a friend to a room and fell asleep. According to the police, when she woke up, three men were in the room and her friend was gone.
Two of the men were known to her, police said. The suspects assaulted and raped her before running away when her friend returned to the room.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the attack.
“We remain resolute in protecting the most vulnerable members of our communities and will ensure that all perpetrators involved are behind bars,” Hadebe said.
Musina police have since increased their presence in the area where the attack happened. They have made the case a priority because of the serious nature of gang rape and the need to protect young people in the border town.
