Prophet Rambau’s family still seeks justice three years later

The family of prophet Fumani Rambau demands a reinvestigation into his death, alleging crucial evidence was overlooked after he was fatally stabbed. Despite video footage and a broken neck, no arrests have been made, highlighting broader community frustrations with slow police investigations.

The family of the late prophet Fumani Rambau from Mpheni village is calling for his death to be reinvestigated, alleging that crucial evidence was overlooked.

Rambau died at Elim Hospital on 25 September 2023, a day after he was allegedly stabbed during an incident at Raphalalani Tavern, popularly known as Ka Raps. According to his family, he sustained severe injuries, including a broken neck. They say they have been seeking answers since his death and are now demanding that the matter be reinvestigated.

The family says no suspect has been arrested in connection with Rambau's death, despite police having access to video footage that may be related to the incident.

An enquiry was sent to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in March, followed by several reminders. Responding to a further enquiry on 22 June, NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said: “We don’t have this matter in our courts. Please check with SAPS if they have arrested the suspects.”

The family's concerns reflect broader frustrations about the handling of criminal cases in the area. Four months ago, more than 100 residents from Elim and surrounding villages marched to Waterval Police Station to raise concerns about crime and the pace of investigations into serious offences, including murder.

Residents complained that some investigations take years to conclude and that, in some instances, cases are removed from the court roll.

Rambau's sister, Gloria Fungeni, said the family remained frustrated by the lack of progress. She said she received a call from police in March informing her that the case had been referred for review.

However, she said the family has not received any further feedback.

“Now, as a family, we want the case to be reinvestigated and for the suspect to be questioned so that we can understand what really transpired,” she said.

The family disputes claims made after the incident that Rambau had been struck by a vehicle. They maintain that no vehicle ran over him and believe the injuries that led to his death were sustained during the altercation at the tavern.

An enquiry was sent to Vhembe police spokesperson Captain Vuledzani Dathi on 23 June, followed by several reminders. At the time of publication, no response had been received.
