The Makhado Local Municipality has put aside R10 million to upgrade the sport centre at the Vuwani Mandani grounds. A further R6 million has been allocated for the renovation of the Bungeni Stadium.
This was revealed by Mayor David Mutavhatsindi last Thursday, when he official launched the two projects at Vuwani and Bungeni.
The upgrade of the sports centre includes the improving a sports field, change rooms, caretaker room and grandstand. "Residents from the village and the other surrounding villages, mostly the youth, are going to benefit a lot. In the past, athletes going for camps used to sleep under trying conditions, but this will be a thing of the past as the different halls can be utilized as sleeping quarters," Mutavhatsindi added.
He also mentioned that, when finished, it will be one of the best centres for sports development and some of the small premier soccer league games will be played there. "This will also benefit the locals economically," he added.
The president of the Makhado LFA, Mr Joseph Maphaha, applauded the municipality. He acknowledged that are serious challenges in relation to sporting infrastructure in the area. "We do not have enough playing fields and indoor sporting facilities. Despite all this, we are happy that the municipality continues to produce professional sports personalities who put us on the world map," he said.
