The recent switching on of street lights in Thohoyandou has been hailed as one of the best things to have happened in the town. On Wednesday evening, Thulamela municipality, led by Mayor Grace Mahosi, formally switched on street lights stretching from JJ Motors to the Khoroni Hotel traffic lights.
Residents of Thohoyandou, mostly those living next to the main street who witnessed the switch ing on, hailed the project, saying that the lights would help expose criminals who had taken over the streets and made them their hunting grounds. The project, worth more than R4 million, was started in March this year and completed at the end of June.
Mahosi said that besides beautifying the town and attracting investors, the new lights would help the police to reduce crime in the area."We are a developing municipality with a vision of becoming a city in 2030, and this vision will not be realized if we do not attract investors who will create jobs for our people.We cannot attract them if we still have crime, and people will not be able to pay for services if they are not working," said Mahosi.
She further indicated that they were serious about developing their towns and job creation.
"As we speak now, we have added three traffic lights at Malamulele and a huge mall is under construction at the old show grounds, where 1 500 permanent jobs will be created, along with 3 000 temporary ones." She added that the municipality would also erect lights at identified crime hotspots in Mukula, Matatshe and Makonde and that all defective and non-functional lights would be upgraded and repaired in the current financial year.
