R44 million refurbishment of Malamulele East water project underway

A R44 million refurbishment project at the Malamulele East Water Treatment Works will bring improved water access to Gandlanani, Xigalo, and Jerome villages. The Vhembe District Municipality appointed NGP Engineering for the 12-month upgrade, addressing long-standing water shortages caused by aging infrastructure.

Residents of Gandlanani, Xigalo and Jerome villages can expect improved access to clean water following the appointment of a contractor to refurbish the Malamulele East Water Treatment Works.

The ageing Malamulele East plant serves rural communities around Malamulele. The R44 million refurbishment project was handed over to the contractor by the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) on 18 February.

During the handover, VDM executive mayor Cllr Freda Nkondo acknowledged ongoing water shortages in the affected areas caused by ageing pipes and valves.

“We will not tolerate contractors who fail to complete their work on time,” Nkondo said, warning that underperforming contractors would be blacklisted and denied future work.

NGP Engineering was appointed as contractor. The project includes refurbishing, supplying and installing raw water pumps and associated pipework, as well as mechanical upgrades at the high-lift pump station, including pumps, valves and accessories.

Project manager Mr Tshimangadzo Mashamba said the company was committed to completing the work and would operate around the clock. The construction period is expected to last 12 months.
