R523 closed between Tshirolwe and Tshikuwi over death protest

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes due to ongoing disruptions. Authorities urge caution and adherence to diversions while the situation remains unstable.

The R523 between Tshirolwe and Tshikuwi was closed on Tuesday, 23 June, following a community protest linked to allegations surrounding the death of a local man.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety urged motorists to avoid the route, warning of disruptions while demonstrations continue.

Community members are demanding answers after the man's body was discovered following a period during which he had been reported missing. Traffic has been diverted, and motorists travelling between Musina, Sibasa, Thathe Vondo and surrounding villages are advised to use alternative gravel roads and N1-linked routes.

Motorists travelling from Musina towards Sibasa are being redirected via the N1 North, turning off at Musekene and passing through Mamvuka and Matsa villages before rejoining the R523 at Tshikikinini en route to Thathe Vondo.

Those travelling from Thathe Vondo towards Musina should turn off at Tshikikinini, pass through Matsa and Mamvuka villages, and rejoin the N1 North at Musekene. Road users travelling towards Louis Trichardt are advised to turn off the R523 at Tshikombani and continue to the N1 at Witvlag.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, follow the instructions of law enforcement officers on the ground, and expect delays while the situation remains unstable. The department said it would continue to monitor developments and issue updates as they become available.
